A USB-C to 12V Car Socket Adapter: Which Chargers Work
A $5 USB-C to 12V car-socket adapter, measured with a multimeter: it only accepts fixed PD profiles (5, 9, 12 V), ignores PPS and AVS, and never passes 15 V.
This is a $5 adapter that does the opposite of a car charger: it takes power in from a USB-C charger and outputs a 12 V cigarette-lighter socket, so you can run a dash cam, a tyre inflator, or any 12 V car accessory off a USB-C brick or power bank.
Its reviews are all over the place, and I think that’s people misunderstanding USB Power Delivery rather than a bad product. So I measured what it actually does.
A note on method
Every other test in this series reads the negotiated contract straight from macOS. This one can’t: the adapter’s output is a 12 V car socket, not something the Mac sees as a USB device. So this is the one test measured with a physical multimeter on the socket output, feeding the adapter from different USB-C chargers to see which voltage it pulls.

The rule: fixed profiles only
The pattern is clean. This adapter only accepts fixed PD profiles - 5, 9, or 12 volts - and grabs the highest one on offer up to 12 V. It cannot use the two adjustable profile types:
- PPS (Programmable Power Supply) - the adjustable range on the Anker. Ignored.
- AVS (Adjustable Voltage Supply, a USB PD 3.2 feature) - how the Apple charger reaches 12 V. Ignored.
That’s why it behaves so inconsistently for buyers: a charger that offers a fixed 12 V step (like the UGREEN) works perfectly, while one that only reaches 12 V through an adjustable range (like the Apple) drops it to 9 V. Same 12 V on paper, completely different result - and nothing on the box explains it.
It never passes 15 V
Even when a charger offered 15 volts, the adapter never took it. That surprised me at first, because a lot of newer Teslas run their accessory outlets up around 15-16 volts now. But for a standard 12 V socket, capping at 12 is the safe move - 15 volts into a 12 V accessory could damage it. I would prefer they included that as the default as I would prefer to pull as little amps through this accessory as possible.
The seller doesn’t understand PD either
Worth knowing before you trust the listing: the specs are confused. USB Power Delivery has no version above 3.2 - so any “PD 4.0”-style claim is a spec that doesn’t exist, and “works with 45-65 W chargers” misses the point entirely. Wattage isn’t what matters here; the adapter needs a fixed 12 V profile, and plenty of high-wattage chargers reach 12 V only through PPS or AVS, which this can’t use.
Verdict
For $5, it’s fine - as long as you feed it a charger with a real, fixed 12 V step. Match it to the right source and it does exactly what it should. The mixed reviews aren’t wrong; they’re just people who paired it with an adjustable-only charger and got 9 volts.
Buying one
The USB-C to 12V car socket adapter works well with a fixed-12V charger and is cheap enough to experiment with. I would hesitate using this beyond experimentation and testing. The device has no safety testing and heat would be a concern, especally at lower voltages.
