Why MagSafe Never Charges Your Mac Slowly (but USB-C Can)
Every MagSafe 3 cable Apple ships is rated for at least 5 amps. That's why MagSafe always charges at full speed while a USB-C cable can throttle.

Here’s a fact that quietly solves one of the most common Mac charging complaints: every MagSafe 3 cable Apple sells is rated for at least 5 amps. There is no cheap, low-current MagSafe cable. They’re all built to the same high-current spec.
That one detail is why MagSafe charging “just works” at full speed, while USB-C charging sometimes doesn’t - even with the exact same power adapter.
The problem MagSafe doesn’t have
On USB-C, the cable decides your ceiling as much as the charger does. A USB-C cable without an e-marker chip is limited to 3 amps. At 20 volts, that caps you at 60 watts, no matter how large the brick behind it.
This trips people up constantly. We measured it directly: an Apple 96W adapter negotiated a 94-watt contract on a proper 5-amp cable, then dropped to 60 watts on a thinner cable that had no e-marker - same charger, same Mac, same port. So on USB-C, you have to think about which cable you grabbed. Grab the wrong one and your charging silently halves.
Why MagSafe is immune
MagSafe 3 sidesteps this entirely, because Apple only makes one kind of MagSafe 3 cable, and it’s rated for the top of the range - up to 140 watts on a 16-inch MacBook Pro. 140 watts at 28 volts is exactly 5 amps, so the cable has to carry at least that. The MagSafe cable that ships with a MacBook Air is built to the same spec as the one that ships with the biggest MacBook Pro.
There’s no 3-amp MagSafe cable to accidentally use. Every one is 5 amps or more. So on MagSafe, the cable is never the bottleneck - the only thing deciding your charging speed is the charger and the Mac.
Why this matters most on a MacBook Air
You might think this only helps the big MacBook Pros, but it actually matters for the Air, and here’s the subtle part.
A MacBook Air charges on the 20-volt rail and, at full speed, pulls more than 3 amps - around 3.3 to 3.5 amps for its roughly 67 to 70 watts. That’s already past the 3-amp limit of a non-e-marked USB-C cable. So to charge an Air at full speed over USB-C, you need a 5-amp cable. Use a plain one and you’re capped at 60 watts.
Over MagSafe, that concern disappears. Because every MagSafe cable is 5 amps, an Air always charges at its full speed - no cable to check, no way to get it wrong.
