How Many Watts Does Your Mac Actually Need? (Only One Does 140W)

Only the 16-inch MacBook Pro charges at 140W over EPR. Every other USB-C Mac caps at 100W, and Airs top out near 70W. Here's the full tier list.

There’s a persistent myth that a bigger charger charges your Mac faster. Past a point, it doesn’t - and that point is set by your Mac, not the brick. Only one Mac can even use a 140-watt charger. Here’s the whole tier list, and how to stop overpaying for watts your laptop will never touch.

What EPR is, and why only the 16-inch has it

Standard USB-C Power Delivery tops out at 100 watts: 20 volts at 5 amps. To go higher, USB-C added EPR - Extended Power Range - which pushes the voltage above 20 volts. The 140-watt profile runs at 28 volts, 5 amps.

Here’s the catch: a device has to be built to accept 28 volts. Among Macs, only the 16-inch MacBook Pro is. Every other Mac laptop is a standard-USB-C device that stops at 20 volts, and therefore at 100 watts. Plug a 140-watt charger into anything but a 16-inch Pro and the higher profile is simply never used - the Mac negotiates a normal 20-volt contract and ignores the rest.

So EPR isn’t “faster charging you can unlock with a big enough brick.” It’s a capability the 16-inch Pro has and no other Mac does.

Why the MacBook Air stops at 70

This is the one that surprises people most, and we’ve measured it repeatedly. A MacBook Air tops out around 67 to 70 watts no matter what you feed it.

We plugged an Air into a 96-watt Apple charger - it drew 67 watts. We plugged it into a charger that offers even more - still 67. The Air asks for what it can use and ignores the rest, exactly the way the 140-watt profile gets ignored on smaller Macs. It’s the same principle at every tier: the Mac sets the ceiling, and headroom above it does nothing.

That’s why every charger we test on the Air plateaus in the same place, and why a 40-watt adapter already gets it most of the way there.

What charger should you actually buy?

  • MacBook Air: anything 70 W or more charges it at full speed. A 65-70W charger is the sweet spot - smaller, cheaper, and you lose nothing.
  • 14-inch MacBook Pro: a 96-100 W charger maxes it out. This is what Apple bundles.
  • 16-inch MacBook Pro: the only Mac where a 140 W charger earns its price - and only over a cable rated for it (see MagSafe and 5A cables).

Buying above your Mac’s tier is money spent on watts it will never draw. A 240-watt charger doesn’t charge an Air any faster than a 70-watt one - the Air was always the bottleneck.
